PM Shehbaz Sharif Approves Plan to Eliminate Meter Readers, Launches Self-Meter Reading App

Prime Minister Shahbaz Sharif has given a comprehensive plan. The Sharif plans to gradually end the role of meter readers in all power distribution companies (DISCOS) with the exception of Karachi Electric. In place of traditional meter readings. A new system will empower electricity consumers to record their usage through a mobile application named Apna Meter Apni Reading.

During a high-level meeting held on June 17, 2025. The Prime Minister directed the Power Division to design and launch the Power Smart Mobile App. The App, which will be accessible in both Urdu and regional languages, to ensure ease of use for citizens across the country. A soft launch of the app is planned to address any technical issues before the full rollout. The government has allocated Rs. 316 million for the development and implementation of this digital transition.

The Power Division has been given one month to finalize the strategy for phasing out meter readers. Clear responsibilities have been assigned to the Pakistan Electric Power Company. (PITC) And also Multan Electric Power Company (MEPCO), covering planning, deployment, and oversight of the project. Along with Apna Meter Apni reading. Other applications, such as Power Smart App, CCMS+, and Lineman Mobile Solution, will also be introduced and will be fully tested to support the change.

Furthermore, the Prime Minister has instructed that any cost savings resulting from the removal of meter readers should be directly passed on to consumers. Ensuring that the benefits of digitalization are shared with the public.
